Taking the development of artificial cells as its point of departure, "Bilayer" is written over a research image of giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs). It experiments with mirroring words to mimic the molecular scale structure of the lipid bilayer, a continuous barrier found in all cells. The structure of the poem also resonates with the structure of the GUVs as they undergo phase separation.
